Rodent droppings in a loft or cupboard: what to do

Finding droppings in a loft, under a kitchen unit or in a cupboard usually means an infestation has been present for some time. How you clean it up matters.

Do not vacuum or sweep

A domestic vacuum blows fine particles straight back into the room. Sweeping does much the same. Droppings and dried urine can carry bacteria and, in the case of rat urine, organisms associated with leptospirosis.

Contaminated loft insulation cannot realistically be cleaned. It is removed and replaced.

How the work is carried out

  • Respiratory protection, gloves and coveralls throughout
  • Surfaces dampened with a suitable disinfectant before any material is disturbed
  • Droppings, nesting material and carcasses removed and double bagged
  • Contaminated insulation lifted and disposed of correctly
  • Surfaces cleaned, biocide treated and deodorised, since rodent scent trails attract further activity

Pest control comes first

Decontaminating a loft while rodents still have access simply means doing it twice. Where activity is ongoing, arrange pest control and proofing first, then have the space cleaned once the problem is closed off.
